The Dome: built to mark a new millennium

The new millennium is a momentous occasion. It's not just a time of celebration, but a time of renewal, with a spirit of confidence, ambition and adventure. A national programme of events is underway. The centrepiece of the celebrations is Greenwich, longitude zero, the home of time. Now it's home to The Dome, an experience that will inspire us to reflect on who we are, what we do and where we live. And where we're going. Imagine what we can do tomorrow.

The Body: Heredities

Number 35 in a limited edition of 10,000. Note: this edition was never fully produced.

Amongst all fourteen zones at the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, one in particular rises above the others to create an icon about people. Architect Nigel Coates has designed the giant figure at the Body Zone. Reclining in a soft embrace, they ask 'can man and woman cherish one another, but also be different as well as equal?' Some 28 metres high, and 70 metres long, the structure is designed for 3,500 people per hour to pass through its internal exhibition spaces. Heredities commemorates this stunning architectural achievement of the year 2000 in replica. Strictly limited to a celebratory edition of 10,000.
